Slowly getting ready for school has value especially for our more anxious child. There is still some time for play and fun in the summer holidays but soon your child will start to think about what the new school year may look like for them. Especially anxious children can do with easing them into school slowly and carefully.

Back to school works best when we go slowly

• Change sleep times a little at a time.

“We’ll go to bed a bit earlier tonight.”

• Practice school mornings before school starts.

“Let’s have a school morning today.”

• Talk about school calmly and often.

“School is coming back soon.”

• Keep the first days easy.

“It’s okay to feel tired or wobbly.”

• Connect before you direct.

“Come sit with me for a minute.”

• Get ready the night before.

“Let’s put your clothes out now.”

• Focus on starting, not finishing.

“Just start — I’ll help you.”

• Share confidence.

“I know you can do this.”

Friends are an important part of their feelings of social success. Invite school friends around for play dates to remind your child how connected they are to their friends even after the long holidays. It's all about relationships.

Life is to be in relations.
