Six gentle ideas that really help an anxious child begin school

1. Practice the routine early

Do a few “school mornings” before term starts: wake up, get dressed, have breakfast, so nothing feels rushed or unfamiliar.

2. Name the worry, don’t rush it away

Say, “It looks like school feels a bit scary right now” — feeling understood often calms anxiety faster than reassurance alone.

3. Create a small goodbye ritual

A wave, a hug, or a special phrase gives your child something predictable and comforting at drop-off.

4. Focus on one safe thing

Help them choose one thing to look forward to. It could be seeing a friend, a favourite activity, or their teacher’s smile.

5. Keep explanations short and calm

Long talks can increase worry. Simple, confident sentences work best: “I’ll be back after school.”

6. Celebrate brave steps, not perfection

Praise effort: “You went in even though you felt nervous, that was brave.” Small wins build confidence quickly.

You’re braver that you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter that you think.
