Something to Think About as Christmas Approaches

Christmas is for you as well as your child. When you allow yourself to enjoy the season, your child feels it too - their happiness is closely linked to yours.

Involve your child in simple Christmas rituals like decorating, wrapping presents, making cards, or cooking together. These shared moments build meaningful traditions.

Use this time to gently reflect on others — family or friends who aren’t with you — and talk about connection and community.

Let Christmas music fill your home. Carols link your child to traditions that have existed for generations.

Allow space for unstructured time and take a break from school talk. The holidays are a chance to relax routines, free your minds, and enjoy being together.

Most of all, let your child see your relaxed, playful side. Christmas is a time to be present, content, and simply enjoy each other.

 •  Christmas is for you as well as your child. Build into it something special to celebrate your busy year as a parent. You deserve it!

 •  Your child will celebrate Christmas more if they see that you are happy on this occasion as well. Their happiness factor is directly linked to yours.

Involving your child in the ritual of Christmas and creating new long lasting traditions.

•   Involving your child in the ritual of Christmas is such a good idea. Perhaps they can wrap presents, write cards, create their own cards, decorate the tree or cook special treats. These are habits worth forming, and you can share them with your child.

 •  Encourage your child at this time of the year to think of others. Talk about family members who won't be with you this year, or perhaps close friends who are not present. It is a time to reflect more deeply on our connection as a community.

 •  Is music part of your life? Play Christmas songs and carols. They bring in the traditional part of Christmas that has existed for hundreds of years. Your child's voice needs to join the chorus of singers over the ages.

 •  Allow your child to be idol. They need to learn to entertain themselves creatively. Holidays are a time when everything is up for grabs, and order and routine go out the window.

•   Have a break from talking about school matters. You need to free your thoughts as much as your child from school issues that consume such a large part of the year. Break free!

 •  Is there something that you will introduce this Christmas that is different or challenging? It could be foods, holidays, entertainment, etc. Be creative with your thinking in how to make this a Christmas with a twist.

 • A parent at Christmas can be a little different. Let your child see your relaxed side, your humour and your idea of fun. This is a great time to be a happy, contented parent who is enjoying time with their child.
